Today I discovered, among a trove of old documents that I scanned last week, my father’s public school certificate. He attended the Hauptschule der Stadt Wien für Knaben (Secondary School in the City of Vienna for Boys) at Schwarzingergaße 4, about an 8 minute walk from his house. The certificate states that he successfully completed the fourth grade, and that he attended the general elementary school from 1929 to 1933 and the secondary school from 1933 to 1937.

For the 1936/1937 school year, it looks like he got “sufficient” achievements in religion, German language, arithmetic and geometry, geometric drawing, writing; “good” in history, geography, natural history, science, freehand drawing, handwork, and singing; and “very good” in physical exercise. I guess I’m a chip off the old block (except for drawing, singing, and physical exercise…)
