Welcome to my genealogy blog, where I attempt to tell the stories that I uncover of my paternal (Muhlrad) and maternal (Nagler) ancestors and relay information about the methods and sources I used to discover these stories.
My father, Norbert, was born in Vienna, Austria, and emigrated to the United States with his parents and sister in 1938. I have traced most of his paternal ancestors, back as far as 8 generations (as of Jan. 2026), to Bohemia (currently, the western half of the Czech Republic). His maternal ancestors were more itinerant, moving from north to south, and then back north again, through what were the Austrian Empire and Kingdom of Hungary (the current countries of Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Serbia, Kosovo) until they settled most recently in Vienna. Again, I have traced a few of my father’s maternal lines as far back as 8 generations.
My mother, Edith’s ancestors have been much more difficult to track down. Her parents, and probably her grandparents, lived in and around the city of Dubno, which, when her parents emigrated to the United States in 1913, was part of the Russian Empire. It later reverted back to Poland, was then briefly under German Reich and then Russian control before becoming part of western Ukraine.
So many stories to uncover!
